Man Kunto Maula – A Tribute to Amjad Sabri

Amjad Farid Sabri was a Pakistani vocalist and a supporter of the Sufi Muslim tradition. He was a son of Ghulam Farid Sabri of the Sabri Brothers. He appeared as one of South Asia’s most famous qawwali artists, frequently reciting poems composed by his father and uncle. He was shot dead in Karachi in a targeted killing professed by a fragment group of the Pakistani Taliban.

He started to take the education of qawwali music from his father at the age of nine and he came on stage with his father to perform in front of an audience at the age of 12. His father taught him Raag Bhairon, which is practised in early morning. For this preparation Sabri needed to get up in the mid night, then after performing Tahajjud (a midnight prayer) practised the baja.

From then on he stayed a standout amongst the most acclaimed qawwali vocalists on the Indian subcontinent and performed all over the world. The last musical project of Sabri was with Coke Studio. His performance on the platform turned out to be his first and last one.

Man Kunto Maula is a Manqabat Qawwali song written by Amir Khusro in the commendation of Ali ibn Abi Talib – fourth Caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate. This qawwali is based on a hadith, i.e. a saying of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him):

Whoever accepts me as a master, Ali is his master too.
